Thoughtful Thursday: "It takes a village"
What are your thoughts on the phrase 'It takes a village to raise a child"
I'm literally thinking out loud as I write this-- but would love to have thoughts from you who is reading!
I think it's great. I think it's wonderful-- raising a child should not only be just us as the parents.. I believe it is healthy for our children to be exposed to other people who can instil great wisdom and knowledge.
Obviously, as the parents, we are the ones that decide who will be around our kids and so forth, but in my personal opinion I think it's great not only for us as the parents but for the children.
I believe the only possible thing that could happen is there could be some clashes... clashes in parenting choices, (discipline and the like), clashes in what you decide to teach your children, (independence, etc) but at the end of the day, we are their parents and it's ok to put our foot down when it comes to certain things.
I think the only way that this kind of thing can be successful is consistent communication.
If someone has entrusted me to watch over their child; I will ask particular questions, is the child allowed this, what does she like to eat, can she have this etc. No matter how familiar I am with the person, there should still be a level of respect as well-- some people take the attitude of 'that's my child'
And of course it cannot be avoided, you will get opinions and advice which also is great, but the thing with opinions and advice.. it's a decision whether you take it or you don't. And its ok if you don't, because as the parent, you know your child more than anyone.
But I think the whole attitude of 'it takes a village to raise a child' is beautiful because raising a child is not easy at all, and at least if you have more people to chip in and help, there is nothing wrong with that; but it also comes with its challenges because as mentioned before, everyone has their own perceptions about children and what they should know and where they should be.
What are your thoughts parents?
